LISTEN TO THE AFFIRMATIONS
I think about safety and how the body knows it's safe a lot. As a survivor, even years after I had found real safety, there were parts of me that still didn’t feel safe. My conscious mind knew that I was out of danger, but my body and my deeper self still felt at risk. That feeling manifested physically in my inability to rest or stop moving, inflammation and illness, saying yes to everything because I didn’t want to face the emotional discomfort of conflict, obsessive self-criticism, repressed movement, fear of being judged… and the list goes on. There were parts of me that felt safer in that dark cage than they felt being vulnerable and self-expressing after what they had been through. I understand that. I feel so much love for that.
We have to mother those parts that feel unsafe and show them with our words but also with our actions that they have reached safety. We can think of the 12 signs as 12 parts of us that each have their own passions, needs, challenges, and signals of safety. They also have different physical manifestations in the world. Our job is to be the Self that lives above those (often conflicting!) voices, hearing all of them, and wisely balancing between them without getting overwhelmed by any given one. You might think, I don’t have any planets in Cancer (for example) so that sign doesn’t matter to me therefore I shouldn’t care about that Cancer affirmation or those Cancer qualities. That perspective is modern and it blocks us from the power of working with the signs.
At the most fundamental level, the 12 signs exist in relationship to one another by aspect and through the elements, planetary rulerships, and modalities. They are interrelated and essential to one another if they are to have balanced expression in the chart. Where one sign is out of balance and struggles, the other signs are there with the medicine. We truly want the best of every sign in our life. The more we integrate those healthy qualities of every sign, the more balanced your chart will be and the more balanced your life will be.
These affirmations are powerful and will help you as they have helped me. However, your body often only knows something truly when it is embedded in the actions of your day. You’ll say the Aries affirmation: “I am safe enough… to hold the discomfort of conflict, tension, and struggle.” but your body will know that you are safe enough for conflict when you actually engage in it and hold that struggle with acceptance. In other words, if you always shy away from conflict or tension, there are Aries parts of you that think, “Oh, I must not be safe enough to be in conflict, I must be unsafe to be myself in this environment/with these people”. When in fact conflict is a critically important part of any healthy relationship as it helps us determine and defend the boundaries we need to live an independent life. In other words, conflict is a critical part of establishing real safety. But engaging in Mars-y conflict can make Venus-y signs like Taurus uncomfortable, so we lean into the Taurus safety signals after conflict: “I am safe enough to move slowly and deliberately, feel pleasure, savor my experience and deeply rest.” If you give your body signals that you are still in the fight or still ‘running from the cheetah’ and you never slow down to rest or stop moving, the Taurus part of you won’t feel calm and safe.
We want a healthy and balanced expression of all the signs in our lives.
There are so many moments in life that betray our safety and put us at risk or actively harm us. These affirmations are not for when active abuse or danger is occurring. These affirmations should be used when you have already moved past the danger and found actual safety, but there are parts of you that aren’t convinced that you are safe.
I dedicate this to you and to anyone who carries wounds from their path.
I walk here with you.
I’ve written these affirmations below to help you embody a feeling of safety across all 12 signs. These are simply one version of these affirmations, please add yours to this list. Say them 2 times. First, you’ll speak the name of the sign before its affirmation, second, you’ll state them as already embodied. The attached recording follows this sequence.
